Proofreading Skills Review (1 Day)
VERSION: 1.0

This one-day workshop helps writers looking for the next level of skill development. It will help you acquire essential proofreading skills for every form of writing. You will learn how to proofread the work of others as well as your own. You will gain confidence as you review key points to consider as a proofreader. You will discover the best way to proofread "live copy" from "dead copy." We use The Gregg Reference Manual as our standard and teach Plain Talk principles in this course. We encourage you to finish this review by taking the one-day Editing Skills course.

Key Benefits
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to proofread for:
- Major and minor grammatical errors: correct pronoun usage, subject/verb agreement, phrases, modifiers, and double negatives for general and business documents.
- Grammar rules we sometimes break for clarity and reading ease.
- Proper word choices over the "nearly right" words.
- Correct punctuation usage for the ampersand, brackets, bullets, colons, commas, dashes, diagonals, ellipsis, hyphens, parentheses, and semicolons.
- Accurate plural spelling and dealing with abbreviations.
- Software, revision, textual, and non-text errors.
- Professional proofreader's nightmares for email, memos, and letters.

Prerequisites
To profit from this course you need to:

- Navigate a Web site using hypertext links (online course only).
- Send and reply to e-mail messages (online course only).
What we require of you
For the onsite class, you must show up for class on time and remain until it is completed (approximately 7-8 hours each day). You will interact with other learners, complete writing exercises, and ask questions when confused.
For the online class, you will take this course at your own pace. Although we estimate you can complete this course in 14 hours, you have up to ten weeks. If you are new to self-directed learning, you may find this style of learning fresh—and a bit frightening. You learn by doing. You alone are responsible for your own learning. That means you must have the drive and discipline to see the course through.
Before you start
- Review your own schedule to make sure you have the time to give to this learning process.
- For the onsite class you have no pre-class readings or activities.
- For the online class you need to review this document, the terms and conditions, and technical requirements to make sure that you meet all of them (see links below).
- After reading this entire description, proceed to the Register page when you are ready to sign up.
